Jenni-Maria Kouch

Artist Bio

Jenni-Maria Kouch is a Finnish visual artist based in Tampere. She holds a First-Class Honours Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Hertfordshire (2010). With over a decade of experience in the visual arts, Kouch has worked as both an art educator and a practitioner, contributing to creative community initiatives and youth work alongside her studio practice. During her parental leave in 2024, she deepened her artistic inquiry, returning to her practice with renewed focus and philosophical clarity.

Working primarily with watercolours on paper, Kouch creates abstracted landscapes where translucent layers of pigment evoke a sense of atmosphere and stillness. Her compositions blend organic forms with intuitive gestures, allowing space for ambiguity and reflection. Through her work, she explores the delicate interplay between the external world and inner states of being.

Kouch’s art carries a metaphysical dimension, contemplating themes such as presence, impermanence, and the unseen structures of emotional and spiritual life. Her paintings invite the viewer to pause and consider their own connection to nature—not merely as a backdrop, but as a mirror for consciousness, memory, and transformation.

Her works have been exhibited in both national and international contexts, including galleries in Finland and London.

Artist Statement

My work arises from a quiet yet persistent longing—for harmony, beauty, and the inner peace that often feels just out of reach. Each painting begins with light and unfolds through translucent layers of watercolour on paper, creating immersive, dreamlike landscapes that invite contemplation. The softness of my palette—pastels, florals, and organic forms—speaks a feminine visual language rooted in acceptance and quiet strength. These elements whisper rather than declare, encouraging stillness in the viewer and offering space for personal reflection.

My abstracted landscapes do not simply represent external nature—they suggest internal geographies. Light becomes emotion; colour becomes memory; space becomes a threshold between the seen and unseen. These works are invitations to enter a liminal world where serenity and vulnerability coexist.

Nature is both my subject and collaborator. Its cycles of growth, decay, and renewal inspire not only the imagery of my paintings but also my values as an artist. I work with professional, non-toxic, plastic-free materials and strive to minimize waste in my process. This environmental mindfulness reflects my deep respect for the earth—not as a passive backdrop to our lives, but as a living presence deserving of care.

I hope my work offers a moment of pause—a gentle encounter where the viewer might rediscover their own connection to beauty, to nature, and to the quiet metaphysical terrain that lies within.
